Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy's (CEGENSA) 10th Year Anniversary celebration

On 30th September 2016, a group of twenty female students from each department and two lecturers were selected to represent College of Engineering for the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy’s (CEGENSA) tenth year anniversary celebration in Legon, Accra. The one-day ceremony focused on celebrating Women Scientists across the Generations.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Josephine Beoku-Betts from University of Wisconsin-Madison USA. Prof. Josephine Beoku-Betts used the keynote address to lay the foundation for the anniversary celebration as well as appropriate practical solutions in overcoming major challenges encounter by women in science. Among the appropriate practical solutions are:

  • Appreciate our local knowledge in Ghana
  • Promote sustainable science through community engagement
  • Put women at the centre of planning
  • Encourage women in higher intuitions to engage in research by giving time off from lectures, reduction of teaching loads and the use of banking teaching approach that is, allowing some courses to be taught in advance ahead of the allocated semester to create space for the lecturer’s research schedule.
  • Universities should undertake researches that shape development agenda of the country.
  • Women should solicit for funding for research and career advancement from intuitions with women development as its priority.

Other speakers presented speeches on funding for research, funding for graduate studies and a day in the life of women in sciences’. Finally, two working groups were formed for Senior High School students and University students with the main aim of mentoring and science clinic to answer all bothering issues of women advancement in high level concentration science professions.

In conclusion, both students and lecturers benefited from the experience of women in science as well as the renewed interest in encouraging women in the respective communities to aspire into higher science concentration levels.
