College of Engineering holds 2nd Quarter Alumni in Diaspora Meeting

 

On July 8, 2024, the College of Engineering (CoE) at KNUST organised its 2nd quarter alumni meeting for its alumni in the diaspora. The primary agenda was to receive updates on the Maiden CoE Alumni Homecoming and hear from the deans of various faculties and the CoE Innovation Centre. The meeting was chaired by the Provost of CoE, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, with Ing. Kumapley welcoming all members and congratulating the Provost on his inaugural lecture.
In his submission, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko emphasised that the primary aim of the meeting was to enhance postgraduate education within the college. He highlighted the importance of fostering an environment that encourages advanced studies and research, aiming to elevate the academic standing and research output of the institution. He urged everyone to contribute to the Endowment Fund to make this vision possible. Ing. Eshun echoed this sentiment, urging all alumni in the diaspora to support the college, both

Prof. Kemausuor, the Dean of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, provided an update on his faculty. He mentioned the generous donation of a CNC Machine and Foundry Unit to the department, as well as the establishment of a CAD modelling setup. Additionally, three faculty members, alongside some students, invented sanitary pads from waste materials. He proudly announced that three associate professors had been promoted to full professors while three lecturers had been elevated to associate professors. Ing. Kumapley congratulated all the professors and encouraged them to continue their excellent work.

Prof. Kwaku Agyei, the Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Geo-Engineering, shared updates about his faculty and the opportunities for alumni to contribute. He noted that Ghanaian surveyors had made donations to the department and that new MSc and MPhil programs had been introduced. The faculty has also opened its doors to alumni wishing to contribute as guest lecturers, joint researchers, and in other capacities to support the college.

Mr. Makafui Bedzra, the Innovation Manager for the CoE Innovation Centre, provided a brief update on the centre. He highlighted key events, including a visit from a representative of Amazon and the invention of a smart irrigation system in Keta and Sunyani by students under the supervision of Prof. Akowuah and other lecturers. He also mentioned the purchase of a 3D filament printer through a joint contribution from the centre and the college.
Prof. Kwadwo Mensah Darkwa, Deputy Project Lead at KEEP, and Mrs. Afia Kesewaa Agyenim Boateng Akossah, Alumni Relations Officer for the college, provided a briefing on the Maiden Alumni Homecoming event. Prof. Mensah Darkwa detailed that the homecoming is a five-day program featuring seminars, a trip to Lake Bosomtwe, a visit to the Asante Museum, a bonfire night, cocktail interactions, a dinner, and more. He emphasised that the purpose of the homecoming is to create a nostalgic experience and urged all alumni to participate.
