The 11th edition of the College of Engineering Awards and Career Fair occurred from 10th to 12th July 2024 at Kumapley Auditorium, themed “Sustainable Solutions: Engineering for a Better Tomorrow”.

The event aimed to recognise students from various disciplines within the college for their outstanding academic performance and contributions to addressing challenges within the engineering sector. It also connected them to industries through industry presentations and career fairs.

The welcome address was given by Prof. Kwaku Amaning Adjei, Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Geo-Engineering, in the stead of the Provost of the College of Engineering, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko. In his address, he celebrated the achievements of the students and the remarkable support of esteemed industrial partners. He also noted that the platform provides students various career opportunities and encouraged them to explore.
He mentioned that the awards were in three categories for undergraduate students in each of the eighteen programs. They are the Excellent Award, which recognises those with a cumulative weighted average of 80.00 and above; the Best Award, which goes to the student with the highest cumulative weighted average in the class; and the Most Improved Student Award, which honours the student who made the highest increment in their cumulative weighted average.

In addition to these awards, this year’s edition includes the Provosts’ Award and a list of special awards from industry partners, individuals, year groups, departments and others.
Prof. Kwaku Adjei urged students from senior high schools to take this opportunity to explore the various fields of Engineering and make informed decisions about their career path and program of study at the tertiary level.

The guest speaker, Ing. Kwasi Nyamekye, the Managing Director of Vester Oil Mills and chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), stressed the importance of engineers in nation-building and their pivotal role in driving industrialisation. He urged students to develop innovative ideas to aid the country's development, particularly in the manufacturing industry, by refining natural resources and adding value. This, he noted, would help reduce the high rate of importation. He encouraged students from diverse engineering disciplines to come together and collaborate on addressing issues related to sustainable energy, highlighting that this is the direction in which the world is headed.
Industry players such as Ghana National Gas Company Ltd., Associated Consultants Ltd., The Quantum Group, Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd., Nestle Ghana Ltd, Interplast, Volta River Authority, Vester Oil Mills, and Virtual Security Africa, among others, had boots to engage students and people about their services, internship and job opportunities.
