The College of Engineering — comprising faculty, staff, the KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP), and the Ghana Engineering Students Association, KNUST (GESA KNUST) — chose to celebrate World Engineering Day in a different way this year. Instead of marking the occasion only on campus, the College organized an outreach engagement aimed at celebrating the impact of engineering while inspiring the next generation of engineers.

The theme for this year’s celebration, “SMART Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization,” guided the initiative. In line with this theme, the College decided to reach out to potential future engineers in schools to create awareness and champion discussions around engineering, innovation, and sustainability.

As part of this effort, the outreach extended beyond campus with a visit to KNUST Basic School, where pupils were introduced to the world of engineering. What began as a simple conversation quickly sparked curiosity and excitement. The pupils actively contributed to the discussions and demonstrated a commendable level of knowledge about science and technology. Where they were uncertain, members of the KNUST team stepped in to add clarity and expand the conversation.

To make the experience more engaging, the pupils were also given the opportunity to explore engineering through virtual reality headsets, allowing them to experience another dimension of engineering and technology in an immersive way. The activity further deepened their interest and highlighted the possibilities that engineering offers for shaping a sustainable future.
