On Tuesday, June 27, 2024, Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost of the College of Engineering, KNUST, delivered an enlightening inaugural lecture themed "Universal Access to Water and Sanitation Services: A Myth or Reality?"
In his lecture, Prof. Nyarko underscored the importance of innovative approaches to overcoming universal water and sanitation access barriers. He presented a detailed analysis of the current state of water and sanitation services globally and in Ghana, pointing out the significant disparities. His proposed strategies included developing a national framework for greywater management, integrating greywater management with existing WASH initiatives, and holding municipal authorities accountable for managing these resources. Additionally, he called for increased investment in research and development to generate sustainable solutions tailored to local contexts.
Prof. (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST and Chairperson for the occasion, highlighted Prof. Nyarko’s extensive contributions to the water supply and environmental sanitation field. The lecture, which was a comprehensive exploration of the challenges and potential solutions for achieving universal access to water and sanitation services, especially in Ghana, emphasised the critical role of sustainable practices and government commitment in addressing these challenges in Ghana.
The lecture, which was attended by all stakeholders, including industry partners, traditional authorities, government representatives, academics, students, family, and friends, showcased Professor Nyarko’s profound expertise and passion for his field. It also reinforced KNUST’s commitment to addressing critical societal challenges through academic excellence and practical research.
