Iowa State University in the United States of America visit KNUST

s

EWB KNUST was formed in July 2019. The organization has grown to a current active student membership of about 200 students across all year groups studying different programmes across the university. In January 2020, EWB KNUST partnered with its sister EWB Chapter at Iowa State University in the United States of America. This partnership was made possible under the Universities Partnership Initiative (UPI) funded by the US Department of State – Embassy Accra. The partnership seeks to promote Institutional Capacity Building through Engineers Without Borders (EWB) in Collaboration with the Ullo Traditional Area (UTA) of the Upper West Region of Ghana.

Under this partnership, there has been several established ongoing collaborative projects in the UTA from health to agriculture. These include: the Ullo Community Clinic Design and Construction; Solar Powered Borehole for Water Supply for Ullo SHS; design and deployment of a water distribution network for staff bungalows at Ullo Community Senior High School; design and construction of prototype smokeless cookstoves for the Ullo Community Senior High School and Rainwater Catchment and Irrigation System for Ullo Community Senior High School.

The KNUST team has so far visited the Ullo community on several occasions for project implementation working with the ISU team when they are in-country. The trip to the community typically involves students who work with technicians under the supervision of Faculty Advisors from KNUST. Aside the trips to the community for project implementation, students from both ISU and KNUST do have regular virtual project meetings for design discussions, implementation scheduling and site reporting. During a recent visit by the teams to Ullo took place from 28th December 2024 to 15 January 2025. As part of the visit to the community, the ISU team also made a stop at KNUST on their return to the US to visit with their colleagues and to familiarize themselves with KNUST campus. While on campus, the team paid a courtesy call on the Provost of the College of Engineering to brief him about the successful project implementation activities. See pictures below during the visit of the team with the Provost .
