The Department of Geomatic Engineering Hosts a Homecoming Event

The Department of Geomatic Engineering of the Faculty of Civil and Geo-Engineering, in collaboration with the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GHIS), organised a homecoming event dubbed ‘GHIS Homecoming’ on the 21st of January 2024 at the College of Engineering New Building.

This event brought together alumni of the department who are also members of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GHIS) to share their experiences, reminisce about past events, connect and interact with students and staff, and give back to the department.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost, commemorated the surveyor’s week and highlighted the crucial role played by GHIS in the department, college and the university at large. He also acknowledged their contributions over the years.

He also appreciated their countless donations and support to the department securing various machines and equipment. He cited the generous donation of equipment and cash of over GH₵ 270,000.00 from Prof. Collins Fosu and Prof. Osei ‘s donation of GH₵ 90,000.00. He used the platform to throw more light on the Endowment Fund, which was set up to award scholarships to graduates for postgraduate studies. This initiative aims to keep outstanding students from leaving the country to pursue further studies abroad, where other nations entice them with attractive scholarships, ultimately contributing to their economies.

‘We have been able to raise 5 million Ghana Cedis for the fund, and we hope to secure more than what we have raised’, he said.

In addition, Prof. Nyarko also introduced the College of Engineering Innovations Centre, which was established to support students in innovations, AI and robotics by giving them the necessary skills to be innovative and entrepreneurship-driven.
