The KNUST College of Engineering officially welcomed its newest cohort of future engineers at a comprehensive orientation ceremony held on Wednesday, 7th January 2026, at the Kumapley Auditorium. The event introduced the first-year students to the College's leadership, including the Provost, Registrar, Deans, Heads of Department, senior members, and representatives of the student body.

In his keynote welcome address, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, the Provost of the College of Engineering, framed the students' academic journey as the foundational construction of their professional identity. "Every examination, laboratory experiment, and design project is meant to shape the most important structure you will ever build: your engineering mind," he stated. He emphasised that resilience, discipline, and consistency are the true hallmarks of a successful engineer. Prof. Nyarko urged students to engage fully with their studies by attending lectures and labs diligently, asking questions, and collaborating with peers. He stressed the importance of wise time management from the outset, noting that "engineering does not reward last-minute efforts," and encouraged students to utilise all available academic support systems actively. Highlighting the core values of the profession, the Provost stated, "Engineering demands integrity. There are no shortcuts to excellence. Academic honesty, respect for others, and personal discipline will define your reputation long after your grades are forgotten." He further encouraged students to broaden their experience by participating in engineering associations, innovation challenges, and industrial training opportunities.

The College Registrar, Dr. Paul Kwadwo Addo, provided an overview of the College's systems and structure, taking students through the rich history of both KNUST and the College of Engineering. He challenged the freshmen to integrate entrepreneurship and community engagement into their academic pursuits. "Focus on improving lives through your research and studies," Dr. Addo advised. "Be innovative and develop creative solutions to pressing societal problems." He also underscored the importance of familiarising themselves with the University's student guide and code of ethics.

The orientation also featured essential presentations from key support units dedicated to student success. Officers from the College Library, Counselling and Support Services, Examinations Office, Innovation Hub, and IT Department outlined their services. The Ghana Engineering Students Association (GESA) also welcomed the new students, extending an invitation to join the broader engineering student community

The College of Engineering extends a warm welcome once again to all first-year students and wishes them a fruitful and inspiring academic journey.
