Ghana Institution of Surveyors Donates Surveying Instruments to the Department of Geomatic Engineering

 

The Department of Geomatic Engineering under the College of Engineering, KNUST, received a generous donation of nine surveying instruments from the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GHIS), specifically the Land Survey Division, on 16th April 2024. This donation follows a promise made during a homecoming visit to the department in February 2024.

The Provost of the College of Engineering, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, thanked GHIS and the Land Survey Division for their donation and support. He assured that the college would ensure the instruments are well taken care of and used to benefit students in the College of Engineering and other colleges. He expressed optimism for a strong and lasting relationship with GHIS.

Prof. Kwaku Amaning Adjei, Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Geo-Engineering, highlighted the high student-to-instrument ratio faced by lecturers and showed gratitude to GHIS and the Land Survey Division for donating instruments to the department.

Surveyor Issac Larbi, Chairman of the Lands Surveyors Division of GHIS, explained that the donation resulted from a visit to the College of Engineering in November 2023, where they identified the need for instruments in the Department of Geomatic Engineering.

“The GHIS team mobilised funds from stakeholders and members of the Land Surveying Division to purchase the instruments, which are being presented today,” he said. 

Surveyor Larbi expressed hope that the instruments would enhance the students' practical surveying sessions and thanked lecturers for their dedication despite the limited number of instruments.

Dr. Anthony Arko Adjei, President of GHIS, assured the College that more donations would be forthcoming, emphasising that the gesture would support their alma mater and contribute to the university's overall development.

“Donating these instruments is a significant step towards enhancing the practical education of students in the Department of Geomatic Engineering, ensuring they are well-equipped for their future careers in surveying and related fields.”
