At the recent Vice-Chancellor’s Students’ Excellence Awards (VCSEA) 2024, Jephtah Ogyefo Acquah and Priscilla Adwoa Fordjour from the Department of Materials Engineering received the Outstanding Innovation Award (Gold). Supervised by Dr. Eric Kwame Anokye Asare, they were recognized for their groundbreaking work addressing significant environmental and public health challenges. They received this prestigious accolade for developing eco-friendly sanitary pads from agricultural waste, specifically pineapple leaves, crowns, and skins.

Their project effectively addresses two pressing issues: improper agricultural waste disposal and the lack of affordable sanitary products. By transforming agricultural waste into sustainable hygiene solutions, they not only mitigate environmental degradation but also provide accessible menstrual hygiene options for women and girls living in poverty. This initiative exemplifies a sustainable approach to product development, showcasing the potential of creativity and commitment in tackling significant health, educational, economic, and environmental challenges.
