The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the MODEC Production Services Ghana JV Ltd (MPSG) to collaborate in areas such as energy, oil, and gas. This event took place on 25th June 2024 at the Council Chamber of the University.
The Provost of the College of Engineering, Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, explained that the dialogue to partner with MODEC began a year ago. According to the Provost, the team from MODEC visited KNUST about a month ago, to formalise discussions on the partnership. He believes there is significant potentials for a collaboration between KNUST and MPSG, including recruitment from the College of Engineering, enhancing internship opportunities, and joint training for micro-credentials. They are also looking to MPSG for adjunct lecturers for the College. He expressed confidence that the partnership will greatly benefit both parties and society.
The Managing Director of MODEC, Mr. Theophilus Ahwireng, provided an overview of MODEC. He stated that MODEC, which has been in existence for more than 50 years, is one of the two largest providers of floating production solutions, including Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Units and Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs), for the offshore oil and gas industry. He mentioned that in Ghana, most FPSOs are offshore, necessitating facilities like those provided by MODEC.
Mr. Ahwireng added that the Operation and Maintenance Division of MODEC, based in Ghana, focuses on extracting hydrocarbons, processing them, and separating gas for electricity generation. A key objective is to integrate these advanced technologies into academic settings, thereby, bridging the gap between academia and industry. Additionally, MODEC is committed to contributing to the energy transition dialogue, aiming to reduce carbon footprints and support the global deployment of windmills. The division also plans to implement a staff exchange programme to foster mutual learning and collaboration, he added.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, expressed her delight in having collaborators that help the University produce well-rounded graduates ready for the global stage, benefiting both institutions. She emphasised the importance of industry partners bringing their technical expertise to train students. On behalf of the University, she promised to work towards a win-win policy for all stakeholders.
