Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost of the College of Engineering, KNUST, and his team held discussions with Bui Power Authority (BPA) on 1st March 2023 at Bui Power Authority Conference Room in Accra.
Hon. Kofi Dzamesi, CEO of the Bui Power Authority, welcomed the team from the KNUST College of Engineering and discussed issues with mutual interest to both parties. The CEO, an alumnus of KNUST (1987), briefed the Provost and his team on the mandate of BPA and its activities. He underscored that BPA distinguishes itself by providing opportunities for young and talented Ghanaian engineers (most of whom were trained at KNUST) to serve in positions of high responsibility.
The two sides explored topics such as joint development of industry-relevant research topics, support for postgraduate studies at KNUST, guest-lecturing slots for BPA staff, internship at BPA for students and staff of KNUST, opportunities for further studies at KNUST for staff of BPA and mentorship for the Women in Engineering (WINE) student group at KNUST.
Bui Power Authority has a large number of female engineers. These professional engineers could mentor young female engineers and be role models to boost their confidence and competence in engineering.
Other members of the KNUST team were Prof George Obeng, Dean, Faculty of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Dr. Joseph Akowuah, Director, The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre, Dr. Lena Mensah, Snr Lecturer, Dept of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Elvis Twumasi, Lecturer, Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, and Dr. David Ato Quansah, Snr Lecturer, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
A working group was established to hold further discussions on the topics discussed.
