The Sustainable Energy Service Unit (SESU) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology on Saturday 18th June, 2022, received some Senior High School science students of the Yaa Asantewaa Girl’s Senior High School (YAGSHS). The purpose of their visit was to discuss Renewable Energy Research at the Senior High School level. The science students of YAGSHS visited the SESU laboratory to familiarize themselves with research on different solar cooking technologies and its potential for the African market.
The Girls along with three of their Teachers, Richard Owusu, Philip Yakubu and Felix Kpeneku have already designed a parabolic solar cooking system that uses sunlight as its source of fuel for cooking. The science students realized a difficulty in attaining higher temperatures and efficiencies with the parabolic solar cooking system and therefore reached out to Ing. Dr. Richard Opoku, the Lead of the Unit (SESU); who offered his expertise and is coaching them to create a more efficient system that can attain higher temperatures for cooking. The girls as part of the visit were treated to a tour of other engineering applications using solar.
