STAFF IN FOCUS – DR. MIZPAH AMA DZIEDZORM ROCKSON

Dr. Mizpah Ama Dziedzorm Rockson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at KNUST and a trailblazer in environmental sustainability and STEM education. With a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from KNUST, her academic journey has been one of dedication, innovation, and meaningful impact. Her research spans municipal solid waste management, waste valorisation, and life cycle assessment of processes, all with the unifying goal of advancing environmental sustainability and fostering a circular economy for natural and artificial resources.

Inspired by her lecturers during her undergraduate years, Dr. Rockson embraced academia as her calling. Motivated to shape the next generation of problem solvers, she has combined teaching and research to address some of the most pressing global challenges. Her unwavering commitment to excellence earned her the distinction of becoming the first female College Examinations Officer (CEO) in KNUST, a role she attributes to her track record of hard work and leadership as both departmental and faculty examinations officer.

Dr. Rockson’s research efforts are deeply rooted in solving real-world problems. Her current projects include assessing the environmental impacts of waste-to-energy technologies and transforming cashew apple fruits, often left to rot on farms, into valuable products like pectin for food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications. Notably, her work has contributed to the establishment of a waste-to-energy plant in Gyankoba, addressing critical waste management challenges in the Ashanti Region. Her commitment to practical solutions ensures that her academic contributions have direct, measurable benefits for communities in Ghana and beyond.

As an advocate for diversity and inclusion, Dr. Rockson emphasises creating an environment where students from varied identities feel empowered to excel. She provides tailored support to students through career guidance, scholarship opportunities, or personal mentorship. Her coaching has led KNUST’s team to consecutive victories in the national Gas Challenge Competition, an achievement she cherishes deeply.

Balancing her roles as lecturer, researcher, and CEO, Dr. Rockson credits prioritisation, delegation, and strong professional networks as the foundation of her success. She encourages young women, especially those in STEM, to remain focused and disciplined, affirming that perseverance can break barriers. As the first female to earn a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at KNUST, she exemplifies the heights that determination can achieve.

Looking ahead, Dr. Rockson is determined to continue conducting impactful research, advancing her academic career, and shaping the lives of her students. Her story is one of resilience and purpose, inspiring a new generation to pursue excellence while contributing meaningfully to society.
