In demonstrating academic partnership, the KNUST College of Engineering, through the KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP), has cultivated a new generation of academic leaders for The Gambia. The journey began when the World Bank, through the African Centre of Excellence (ACE) Impact Project, partnered with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to elevate the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) into a premier degree-awarding institution, now known as the University of Science, Engineering and Technology (USET).

As part of this strategic investment, eleven GTTI staff members were enrolled in specialised PhD programs at the KNUST College of Engineering. Among them was Dr. Seedy Fofana, who dedicated himself to advanced study and research, graduating with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2023.
Dr. Fofana’s newly honed expertise and leadership qualities have led to his recent appointment as the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Gambia University of Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology (USET).

Dr. Fofana looks forward to collaborating with his faculty, staff, and students to advance engineering education, foster a culture of innovation, and build vital bridges between industry and academia in The Gambia.
His story is a resounding success for the KEEP project and a testament to the KNUST College of Engineering’s pivotal role in building sustainable engineering capacity and leadership across West Africa.
