The Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, together with the University Council and some Management members of the University have commissioned projects on campus to climax the 70th Anniversary of the University.
The Asantehene, assisted by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Ghana Police Service, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and the Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour commissioned a Police post named ‘Research Hill Police Station’ behind the Faculty of Art. It was noted that the police post is an essential step in the University's decision to curb security issues of students living off-campus.
The KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP) Postgraduate Building was also commissioned. The Building houses state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching facilities for the digital development and energy thematic areas, namely, the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL), the Power Systems Lab, and the Renewable Energy Lab. This building is also equipped with lecture halls and a postgraduate study room for private studies. The KEEP Project Lead, Professor Jerry John Kponyo disclosed that the Project is funded by the Government of Ghana as part of the World Bank’s Africa Centres of Excellence for Development Impact (ACE Impact) Project hosted by the KNUST College of Engineering. The building will serve as a hub for research and innovation in engineering.
Other projects commissioned include a three-story building comprising offices and classrooms for the College of Engineering, meant to accommodate more students and offer a favourable environment for teaching and learning.
The Chancellor and the team also paid site visits to the KNUST Bottling Company and the KNUST Teaching Hospital to check on the progress of work. A statue honouring His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was also unveiled at the Unity Hall Roundabout to demonstrate the University’s appreciation to his Royal Majesty for his sterling leadership over the years as the Chancellor of the University.
His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II lauded the collective efforts of the Vice Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, Management of the University, constructors, and architects for their good works.
