The Management of the College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs) Rita Akosua Dickson, has presented a total of Fifty (50) brand new laptops to brilliant but needy students on Thursday, 17th July, 2025. The presentation was in line with the Vice-Chancellor's vision to ‘Support One Needy Student with One Laptop,’ an initiative dubbed the 'SONSOL Project’. The initiative since 2021, has distributed over Three Thousand, Three Hundred (3,300) laptops to KNUST students.
In a speech read on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Provost of the College of Engineering, Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, reaffirmed the University's commitment to providing inclusive education, ensuring that no student is left behind. According to the Provost, the technological evolution of the higher education ecosystem was hastened by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the use of diverse information technology (IT) tools in tertiary education. The University, since the COVID-19 pandemic adopted a blended learning policy, 70% in-person and 30% online, and has invested over Five Million United States Dollars ($5,000,000) in digital infrastructure to support academic activities in the University.
“The future belongs to graduates who can confidently navigate the digital space. The world today has little room for digital illiteracy, and at KNUST, we take this challenge very seriously. Therefore, the University is mindful of not only focusing on offering excellent online teaching and learning to students, but also imbibing 21st Century IT skills, to make our students ready for the world of work,” he added.
Professor Biritwum Nyarko urged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity and to one day also contribute to similar efforts. “Don’t forget the sacrifice and kindness shown to you today. Let them become part of your success story,” he said.
This year’s programme was supported by multiple individual and institutional donors, including Telecel Ghana, State Insurance Company (SIC), Isaac Books and Stationery, Stanbic Bank, Ecobank Ghana, OmniBSIC Bank, Multinec Enterprise, Hitachi Construction Limited, Omega Compu-System Engineering, OB Foundation, Yashcom Company, Papnobles Ventures, Eshmon OB Company, Ruth Keep fit Club, and student bodies such as the SRC-KNUST, GRASAG-KNUST, and NUGS-KNUST.
