Student Spotlight: Frederick Agyekum – Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Engineering Students Association (GESA)

Frederick Agyekum’s journey is one rooted in purpose, passion, and perseverance. Hailing from Takoradi in Ghana's Western Region, Frederick’s story is one of growth shaped by faith, discipline, and a deep desire to make a meaningful impact. An old student of Mfantsipim School, he cultivated early values of excellence, leadership, and service that continue to define his path.

Now a final-year Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Frederick has grown into a passionate problem-solver driven to tackle real agricultural challenges in Ghana through engineering innovation. A simple yet powerful realisation sparked his passion: agriculture feeds the nation, and engineering can transform it. That conviction has shaped his academic focus and his vision for developing sustainable, innovative solutions for food production systems.

Beyond the classroom, Frederick serves as the Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Engineering Students Association, where he has demonstrated exceptional leadership while maintaining academic excellence. Balancing books and leadership responsibilities has not always been easy, but through discipline and clear goals, he has grown academically, professionally, and personally. Serving in this capacity stands as one of the highlights of his engineering journey, strengthening his communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.

Throughout his studies, Frederick has gained a transformative insight: engineering is not merely about calculations and formulas; it is about solving real-life problems efficiently, creatively, and sustainably. This perspective continues to shape how he approaches both academics and leadership.

Grounded in faith as a committed member of the Assemblies of God, Frederick draws strength and guidance from his spiritual life. His faith remains a steady foundation in his pursuit of excellence and service. Outside academics and leadership, he enjoys playing football and basketball, hobbies that keep him active, competitive, and balanced.

As graduation approaches, Frederick’s focus is clear: advancing in sustainable agricultural systems and contributing meaningfully to engineering innovation in Ghana and beyond. His message to aspiring engineers is simple yet powerful: stay curious, remain consistent, and never underestimate the value of practical experience.
