On Friday, 21st March 2025, a group of 150 first year Telecommunications Engineering students, accompanied by 16 staff members, embarked on an educational field trip to Telecel Ghana Company in Aodum. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to Ghana’s telecommunications industry, enhancing their understanding of real-world applications while developing both technical and social skills.
Upon arrival, students were equipped with safety gear, including helmets, reflectors, and boots, and received a briefing from a safety officer. The trip covered key sections within the Telecel facility, beginning with the test room, where students were introduced to the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and learned how fixed landline services deliver voice and internet to customers.
The next stop was the power systems section, where students examined the telecommunications mast and explored its role in signal transmission. They learned about the importance of rectifiers and backup power systems in ensuring uninterrupted network services.
Students also visited the transport room, which manages internet connectivity and signal transmission. This section demonstrated how disruptions in mobile services often originate from this critical hub. The tour concluded at the mobile switching room, where students were introduced to the Digital Switching Center (DSC), which monitors call charges, handles SMS services, and facilitates Telecel Cash (Telecash) transactions through the M-CAT system.
The trip provided valuable insights into telecommunications infrastructure, from call processing to mobile financial services. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, students gained a deeper appreciation of the industry’s role in modern communication. The visit was a highly enriching experience, reinforcing the significance of telecommunications in everyday life.
